Chris Townsend is an insurance industry leader and innovator with deep expertise in both the Life and Property & Casualty insurance sectors in wide-ranging markets. He has lived and worked across four continents, earning a track record for developing and executing strategy, building high-performing teams, driving profitable growth, and improving customer and shareholder outcomes.

Chris joined Allianz SE as a Member of the Board of Management in 2021. In 2023, he led the formation of Allianz Commercial to deliver the full value of Allianz’s scale and capabilities for the benefit of its customers, brokers, and shareholders.

Chris plays a central role in leading Allianz’s net-zero transition plan and actively promotes alliances and public-private partnerships that focus on adaptation and resiliency. He advocates for expanding the insurance value proposition to include climate risk consultation and encourages climate prevention, mitigation, and resiliency measures. He serves as a leading voice contributing to platforms such as the World Economic Forum and the Munich Security Conference on how insurers can help build community resilience by applying solutions in new ways and in unserved markets, such as using climate-related parametric triggers and emphasizing adaptive rebuilding.

Chris began his career in 1989 with Aviva in London and moved to AIG in 1991 where he spent 20 years leading businesses living and working in UK, US, Asia and Australasia, including CEO of Asia Pacific. In 2012, Chris moved back to Hong Kong to become the CEO for MetLife in Asia and was part of the Group Executive Committee of MetLife. In 2018, he returned to AIG to become the CEO International based in Hong Kong and London, responsible for all of AIG’s general insurance business outside of the USA.
